This area has a mix of homeowners and renters, and quite a few of the homes have been passed down for several generations. In a large open lot previously home to Birney Elementary, some residents play horseshoes, have snowball fights and ride ATVs. Petoskey-Otsego is not without its issues; there are several abandoned two-family apartments, some in good structural shape, and homes in need of board-ups. In the area there is one coffee shop, a grocery store in a bordering neighborhood, two churches and a police station.
